The United States Pluto Return

On February 22, 2022, Pluto, the planet of death, transformation and power will return to the exact point it was when the Declaration of Independence was signed back in 1776. This is what is meant by a “return”, which will be exact on this date.

You may of heard of a Saturn return that happens to individuals, every 28 years or so, but none of us live long enough to see a Pluto return in our lifetime, as Pluto takes 248 years to return to the point of our birth. Nations and empires however can last long enough to see this. So what does this mean for the United States?

It’s important to note that while the exact return is on Feb.22, 2022, the transits of slower moving planets, like Pluto, tend to last over a longer term. So there may not be any dramatic events on this day itself.. Although I would take note of events taking place in the US on or around this date as they could signify trends of long term importance.

The exact degree of the Pluto return is 27 Capricorn, and with an orb of 3 degrees on either side, the return can be seen to be in effect from 2020 - 2024. This year with the exact return, will probably be the most dramatic and important. Below are some possible themes.

1. Political Power Struggles
Pluto is about power and how we wield it, for good or ill. When Rome experienced it’s first Pluto return in 216-223 CE it saw military coups, short lived reigns of emperors, and political instability. The unpopular Severus dynasty was rife with scandals and corruption. They were so unpopular it led to a couple of the emperors assassinations by the military. The second Pluto return of the Roman Empire 461 - 468 signalled the end of an era as threats from outside its borders and a weakening from within led to its downfall. While we may not see this level of violence, the widespread polarization of American politics and mistrust on either side is a continuing theme for the US. The struggle for power on either side can lead to disruptions and imbalance and even separation..

2. Religious violence
One way power is exerted is through subconscious beliefs like religious ones. Pluto represents the subconscious and as we know religious beliefs can exert a powerful force on people. One country we can look to for clues with this, is England. The British empire’s second Pluto return 1555 - 1562 saw the rise of Queen Mary (also known a Bloody Mary), who persecuted Protestants leading to the execution of many, thus her fearsome nick name. After her death Queen Elizabeth l rose to power and went after Catholic loyalists like the famous Mary Queen of Scotts. One only has to observe the culture clash between the evangelical minority in the US and the majority secular population, to see this theme repeat itself.

3. Environmental Issues
Pluto is the god of death, and at the writing of this blog,  the US is approaching one million deaths from Covid. During the first Pluto return for the British empire 1313 - 1315  the was the Great Famine which lead to increased deaths, illness and social upheaval. While Covid is an obvious parallel, the climate crises with the increase of extreme storms, fires and floods echoes this theme of natural disasters causing death and disaster.

4. Technological Breakthrough
It’s not all doom and gloom. Pluto ends things, but he sweeps out the old to make way for the new. After the second Pluto return for England, a golden era in exploration, art and economics occurred. The Elizabethan era is considered at time when the Britain flourished. The third Pluto return of 1801-1810 saw the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution and the solidification of the United Kingdom. While Pluto returns can be a time of uncertainty, they can also lead to a renaissance.

5. Social Justice
Pluto is a god of the darkness, the hidden and the marginalized. As such he can stand for those who have been pushed aside and denied access to power. During the Pluto return of 1801 - 1810 of England, the slave trade was abolished, leading to changes in other countries, including the United States, and a growing social awareness through the western world in the 19th century. These struggles are echoed today in the Black Lives Matter movement and other marginalized groups demanding Justice long overdue.

In short, a Pluto return can sound scary, but it is part of the life cycle of empires. It is how we handle power and what we decide to do with it collectively that is ultimately up to us. Do we use it to squash others, to polarize and to divide? Or do we use this as an opportunity to address the injustices, and make a new start that is better for everyone.

2022 the Year of the Lovers

Did you know every year is associated with a particular tarot card? Knowing the tarot card for the year can help you understand the particular energies of the year and help you navigate the year ahead. This year 2022 is the year of the Lovers!

Figuring out the Tarot card of the year is relatively easy. Simply add up the digits of the year, and note the corresponding major arcana tarot card. If the digits are more than 22 (22 = Fool, as the Fool is number 0 in most decks), then add up the digits again to get your answer. This year 2022 is relatively easy (2+0+2+2 = 6). As number 6 in the Major arcana is the Lovers, that makes it the tarot card for this year.

So what does that mean for us collectively? Please note that we each individually have our own tarot card for the year which you can learn how to calculate here . However the Lovers will be the energy ruling the wider collective and affecting all of us on some level.

An Emphasis on Relationships
While the Lovers naturally brings romance to mind, this card  brings all relationships to the forefront this year. We are being challenged to examine the quality of our relationships with others and examine which are on firm footing and which might need more work, or where you need to let go and move on.

Leading With the Heart
While some cards in the tarot, like Justice, ask us to listen to logic and reason, the Lovers asks us to listen to our heart. It doesn’t mean you cast reason aside, but it does mean that your heart is what will lead you through this season of uncertainty. Remember the heart knows what it wants, and the mind is it’s servant, rather than it’s master. It’s a good year to find quiet time to contemplate, so you can get in touch with your deepest feelings and listen to the messages of where your heart is leading you.

Facing Tough Choices
The Lovers is a card of choice, often between two or more things that look equally good. That’s why it’s so important to  listen to your heart, because logic can talk us into either choice when they both look so tempting. It’s also important to remember the other people involved that may be affected by our decisions. This year it’s important to keep in mind that we are part of a greater whole, and we are not each isolated islands. The choices you make do have an effect on those around you.

Harmony and Beauty
This year is numerologically a 6 year, an number that seeks harmony and beauty. Expect to see a lot of exciting new film, television, music and art that inspires and uplifts. Fashion and decor may become more joyful and colourful this year as people seek to make themselves and the world around them more beautiful.

Romance
Of course we can’t talk about the Lovers without talking about romance. This is a subject that will be on a lot of people’s minds this year. Wether it’s seeking out that new special someone, bringing more romance into existing relationships, getting married, or ditching a toxic partnership, romance is top of mind for many of us. Expect also to see more romantic themes reflected in art and culture this year.

What is your personal tarot card for this year? And how do you expect the energy of the Lovers will affect your 2022?

Mercury in Libra - Diplomatic Communication

I've decided to revamp my blog after an absence of several months. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it, but after giving it a fair bit of thought, I have decided to focus on astrology. I want to focus each week on a major aspect, planetary sign shift, or astrology topic. If there are any topics you'd like me to cover, please let me know if the comments below.

Today's topic is Mercury in Libra. On August 30, 2021 Mercury moves into the sign of Libra where he will stay for a longer than usual amount of time due to a retrograde period from September 27 - October 18, 2021. He finally moves out of Libra, into Scorpio on November 05, 2021. So this energy will be with us for two months.

 Mercury in Libra

Mercury is the planet of communication, travel and the mind. When he moves into the sign of the scales, communication becomes more diplomatic, and people want to talk more about partnerships, romance, the arts, and beauty. It's a good time to make plans for renovations, beauty treatments, weddings, and creative projects. If you know your astrology birth chart, look to your Libra house to see where this energy will be showing up for you over the next two months.

Even if you do not know your chart, generally this period is a good one for communicating with partners. This can be romantic partners, business or creative partnerships. Its a period where compromise and coming to fair and equal decisions are highlighted. The down side of Mercury in Libra is it can lead to passive aggressiveness, rather than confronting others directly, as there is a temptation to avoid conflict. This can also lead to over compromising in an effort to smooth things out, which one can regret later. It's good to try to be fair and diplomatic, but make sure you are not compromising yourself.

This extended Mercury period will see some aspects with the slower moving planets repeat themselves three times, once as Mercury moves forward direct through Libra, once again during the retrograde (where he appears to move backwards), and then again as Mercury moves forward direct again.

Mercury square Pluto - Squares are stressful aspects which create internal tension. There can be uncomfortable communications with those in power (Pluto) or with those you may have some power over.  Expect difficult insights to arise around issues of mortality, leadership, and structures in our lives. Mercury in Libra wants to smooth over these topics and doesn't want to talk about them, but Pluto is compelling us to do so.

Mercury opposite Chiron - Oppositions are also stressful aspects, but rather than showing up as tension, they often show up as outside forces or events that challenge us to find a balance, or to make a clear choice. Chiron is the wounded healer, who is presently in Aries, the sign of self identity. Some of the compromises we are being asked to make may bring up old wounds to our sense of self from when we were younger and challenge our ego and identity. Do we choose to find a balance between our partner and self, or do we completely give in or walk away entirely? Whatever our decision, Chiron asks us to approach old wounds with new and better behaviors.

Mercury trine Saturn - It's not all challenging news for this period. Trines are helpful and supportive aspects that bring ease and opportunities. Saturn in Aquarius has been asking us to create rules and boundaries around community and to be responsible to the good of the whole. It is a good time to talk about our long term plans and what kind of rules we want in place to make society better for everyone. And Mercury in Libra makes us better listeners to another person's point of view, which can help us make things more equitable for everyone.
