Sun in Scorpio - Spooky Season

On October 22, the Sun enters the sign of Scorpio, kicking off Scorpio season. Scorpio is a sign connected with the underworld, death, transformation, sexuality and spirituality. It is no accident that this is the time of year when we celebrate Halloween and all things spooky. In the Northern Hemisphere the nights are getting longer and the days colder, pushing us into our homes to get cozy and turn inward. Scorpio is a sign ruled by both Mars, the traditional ruler, and Pluto the modern ruler. We can see Plutonian elements in the spooky side of Scorpio, as Pluto wants us to look into the darkness, to uncover what is hidden and look the shadows square in the face. We are encouraged to embrace this with all the Halloween decorations and festivities, but also with the trees losing their leaves, the nights getting darker and the coming of the cold weather. Scorpio season reminds us to let go and embrace the transition to the fallow time of year. Other celebrations at this time of year include the Dias de losMuertos, Remembrance Day and Samhain all which honour the dead. It is believed that the veil between this world and the next is thinner now. This makes it a great time of year for communing with departed loved ones and our ancestors, or to engage in divination.

Oracle of the Radiant Sun

The traditional ruler of Scorpio is Mars, planet of action, energy and war. This can be seen in the element of fire playing a large part of this time of year with celebrations like Bonfire Night and how this time of year is one when many of us light candles or start using the fireplace again. It is only natural that as it gets darker and colder outside we bring the element of fire into our homes to bring warmth and light. I also think the jack o lantern is a great symbol of light in the dark time of year. It acts as both a symbol of protection and a beacon for the departed.

This Scorpio season, the Sun only joins Mercury in this sign, as Venus is in Sagittarius already and Mars is still in Cancer, while all the outer planets are in other signs. This makes this Scorpio season a little less scorpio-ish. Venus in Sagittarius brings a more playful element and Mars in Cancer a protective and emotional element to the season. It is still a time of looking within and of having deep conversations, but we may feel a little lighter and more inclined to go out and have fun. On November 01, the Moon joins the Sun in Scorpio for a New Moon at 9 degrees of Scorpio. New Moons are a good time to set goals and intentions, to make a new start. Scorpio tends to rule topics like sexuality, spirituality, and magic, but also long term finances and debts. This is a great time to set goals in any of these areas. The Full Moon is on November 15, at 24 degrees of Taurus, when the Sun and Moon are in opposite signs. The Moon in Taurus asks us to look at things from a more practical level and to enjoy being present in our bodies and in the world. Its great to look within and examine the spiritual, but we need to live in the material world too.

Other aspects the Sun in Scorpio will be making include Sun trine Saturn in Pisces on November 04. Saturn in Pisces tends to bring feelings of melancholy and sad poetic energy. This can be a great time to examine some of our feelings around loss and to express it in creative ways like poetry, art or song. On November 16, Scorpio opposes Uranus in Taurus, just one day after the Full Moon. Watch for unusual and unexpected events to shake things up and get you to re-examine your values. Finally on November 18, the Sun will trine Neptune in Pisces. This is a wonderful day for creativity and for practicing magic or divination, or getting a reading for yourself.

While this Scorpio season may not be as dark and spooky as others in the past, this season is still a great time to do some journalling around what your values are and to make art that expresses your deeper feelings. Its also a good time to embrace the season and enjoy all that the autumn season has to offer.
